U.S.-Russian Scientists Skeptical about Central European Missile Shields
According to a team of U.S. and Russian scientists, our planned missile shields in Poland and the Czech Republic would not protect the region from Iran’s missiles. (Source)
According to the report, we “could not engage that missile” and could be duped by decoys. “The more immediate danger comes from the military and political consequences that would follow if Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons…The urgent task, therefore, is for Russia and the United States (and other states) to work closely together to seek, by diplomatic and political means, a resolution of the crisis surrounding the Iranian nuclear program.” The team also contended that Iran won’t have nuclear warhead capability for at least five years.
In light of Iran’s nuclear ambitions and defiance, downplaying its capabilities is dangerous, and neglecting our efforts to protect Europe with missile shields is wrongheaded. Both Iran and North Korea value ballistic capability, and each has invested in building weapons. If we show any hesitancy in dealing with this threat, it will fuel their nuclear ambitions. They may not have the capability now, but they’re striving to achieve it.
